Daniel Tota hails from Washington State in the United States. He always seemed to have an affinity for flying, both aircraft and spacecraft. He first piloted on his own at age 11. Going into Starfleet seemed to be where to go to fly spacecraft.

At age 17, he received his appointment to Starfleet Academy and excelled in flight dynamics, navigation, stellar cartography and also scored high in subjects that brought him to the attention of Starfleet Intelligence. Given his choice, he continued his career in flying spacecraft. He graduated the academy and immediately began as a helmsman on the Earth-Jupiter cargo runs for 6 months. He then moved to the Fleet Yards at Copernicus Base before being assigned to the Saladin Class USS Bonaventure. He was then assigned as a newly promoted Lieutenant to the USS Valkyrie as Chief Helmsman, where he replaced Lt. Cmdr. Shrun after he transferred off to become XO on the USS Strausburg.
